I’m an HGTV House Hunter’s junky, so imagine my excitement about seeing Howard’s house. There was absolutely nothing cookie cutter about the neighborhood. His house was on a huge lot with wonderful curb appeal and a wide porch. The door opened to a living room with vaulted ceilings, followed by a gourmet kitchen with granite counters, stainless steel appliances, and beautiful wood cabinets. Not that builder grade material. What made me gasp was the adjoining screened-in porch with high ceilings that added a dramatic feel to the room. My eyes shifted to a wooden swing hanging from a chain bolted to the covered porch.

I walked over and took a seat. “I always wanted one of these. I had fantasies as a girl growing up, going out after dark, and swinging while the rest of the world was asleep.” There was a soft breeze, so the evening couldn’t have been any better if I’d planned it myself. “My grandparents used to have one of these on their porch.”

“So did mine.” Howard stood in the doorway arms folded, staring at me with amusement dancing in his eyes.

I lifted my feet from the floor, allowing the swing to sway back and forth. “Southern porches are made for swings, rocking chairs, and sweet tea.”

“Would you like a glass?”

“Absolutely,” I replied with a laugh.

Howard chuckled and moved inside. While he was gone, I gazed out into the large, privacy-fenced backyard. There was an outdoor kitchen with a huge barbecue grill, a gazebo, and an in-ground swimming pool. The space was surrounded by lounge furniture and had been designed for outdoor entertainment.

“It’s probably not how grandma used to make it,” Howard said as he stepped out onto the porch. “But it will definitely satisfy a sweet tooth.” He handed me one of two tall glasses, then took the seat beside me.

I took a sip and was surprised. “Mmm, this is good. Did you make this?”

“If pouring a glass of Bojangles’s sweet tea into a glass counts, then yes, I made it.” He gave me a playful look and we both exploded with laughter.

He stretched his long legs out in front of him and used them to rock the swing. We both sipped and stared out into the floodlight-lit yard.

“You have the perfect backyard for entertaining guests.”

“Yep, that’s what all my boys say, which is why I’m hosting a promotion party for Chief Gage Taylor.”

“He just made chief?”

He shook his head. “No, he just made command chief.”

“Wow. That’s huge.”

He nodded and I could see the pride in his eyes. “Yes, it is, which is why I am hosting a party Labor Day weekend.” He clasped his free hand with mine. “I would love for you to come.”

“I would like that very much.” I took another sip, then there was a long pause before I sighed and said, “I could stay right here forever.”

Howard looked over, smiling with perfect white teeth and a sexy smirk on his lips that sent a tingle through my body. “Forever, huh?” he nodded knowingly.
